My latest 3D printer is the cornerstone of 3D Pets

Why the Bambu Lab H2C ensures that your pet truly remains themselves

Every photo I receive is different. One time it’s the white socks of a cat, then again the grey eyebrow spots of an old dog, or the three colours mixed together in the fur of a guinea pig. That’s exactly what I want to see in the figurine I create, not "a dog that looks like your dog", but yóur pet.

That is only possible if the printer itself can keep up with what I want to achieve. Since I switched to the Bambu Lab H2C, the absolute flagship of Bambu Lab, combined with two AMS 2 Pro units and one AMS HT, the difference compared to what I could make before is enormous. I would like to explain why, without technical jargon.

A palette with eight brushes, without ever having to rinse

Imagine a painter who works with eight colours at once. A regular painter has to rinse their brush each time they change colour, otherwise the colours blend into each other. That rinsing takes time, and a bit of paint is always lost.

Most multi-colour 3D printers actually work in the same way: for each colour change, they "flush" away the old filament (this is called purging) before the new one can be inserted. With a model that has a lot of colour details, think of speckled fur, a coloured collar, or striking eyes, this can amount to a mountain of discarded material, and sometimes a small blemish at the point where the colour changes.

These "noodles" are affectionately called "poop" by us because of their rather suggestive shape...

The H2C solves this differently. Instead of rinsing one brush, it has six interchangeable "brushes" (technically: hotends) that it picks up and swaps out itself, each in just eight seconds. Each colour thus gets its own, clean brush. The result: up to about 58% less wasted material than with a classic setup. And, even more importantly for you, sharper and purer colour transitions on the figurine itself.

Up to 9 colours at once, and a secret weapon against ugly marks

My setup, two AMS 2 Pros plus one AMS HT, is exactly the configuration that Bambu Lab itself recommends to get the most out of the H2C. With this, I can currently add up to eight colours at once to a single model. Enough to print a guinea pig with three fur colours, pink ears, and dark eyes in one go, without needing to touch up afterwards.

There is also a ninth slot, and I consciously do not use it for colour, but for a specialised material that serves as a kind of "separation layer" between the figurine and the temporary support structures needed during printing. Normally, those support structures, once removed, leave small scratches or rough spots behind. Just in places like under a chin, between legs, or around an ear, where it needs to look very precise. Thanks to that ninth slot, those areas remain clean, without me having to sand or hide them. It’s a small detail that you as a customer never see, because it simply isn’t there anymore.

Precision to the hair's breadth

Behind the scenes, the H2C controls every brush stroke with an accuracy of less than 50 microns. For comparison, an average human hair is about 70 microns thick. This means that when one colour ends and the next begins, for example, where the white of a snout transitions into the brown of an ear, that boundary falls exactly in the same place layer by layer. No blurry edges, no colours shifting slightly as the figurine grows.

For you as a customer, this means that fine details, such as a spot around an eye, a speckled nose or the colour transition in a two-coloured coat, are preserved as they are in real life, instead of fading into a coarse approximation.

The H2C comes out of the box impressively accurate, but I don't stop there. I have created and further refined my own set of print settings, specifically tailored to what a pet figurine needs: how layers align with each other, how colours blend seamlessly, and how the printer handles small, detailed shapes like paws, tails, and whiskers. That is the craftsmanship you won't see in a specification list, but it is reflected in the final result: a figurine that doesn't just "look nice," but truly is right.
