The name "3D Pets" evokes the same image for most people: a cat, a dog, maybe a rabbit or a guinea pig. Small, cuddly, on the lap. Until a message came in that made me think: if I could also create something from a cow. A cow that had won a medal at an agricultural fair, to be precise. Some time ago I even received a question about a koi carp.
That question made me think, and that curiosity quickly turned into inspiration. If I could perfect this, I could not only answer that one question, but also serve horse lovers and owners of other "slightly larger" animals with the same skill as with the cuddly pets that 3D Pets started with.
I was intrigued, and got to work
I selected a photo of a horse in motion, a photo I found online with just the right angle and movement to experiment with, and put it through the same process as any other figurine that comes from here. No special treatment, trying it out myself and refining the process until it matched just as well as with a dog or a cat.
The result is shown in the photos above: a figurine of about 18 centimetres, with mane and tail in full motion, exactly the same finish as you would expect from 3D Pets. Next to the original photo, you can immediately see that it is not an approximation, but the posture and character of that one animal at that one moment.
Why a horse fits just as well as a guinea pig
The answer lies not in the animal, but in how we work. Every figurine I create, whether it’s a hamster or a horse, starts with the same: a photo, and one of our standard sizes (12, 18, or 24 centimetres). A photo of a Shetlander or a Shire horse is equally reduced to the same scale as the photo of a chihuahua. The real animal may be half a metre or two metres tall. On the table, it always becomes a figurine that fits in your hand..
The craftsmanship required for this (the shape, the posture, the details in the coat or the mane) is always done by us before printing, regardless of how large or small the original is. As a result, there is little change in the process or in what we can promise you in terms of likeness. Only the size of the subject in the photo changes, not our approach.
